“Transforming Principles into Practical Solutions for DC Plan Sponsors”

June 11-12, 2008
Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco, CA

Many DC-focused events continue to explore current and future regulatory initiatives, but many fail to connect those efforts with the daily concerns of US plan sponsors and most fall short of introducing solutions. Now in its 18th year, Institutional Investor’s Defined Contribution Forum will endeavor to offer those solutions. While the Forum’s program will explore the breadth of issues facing US plans — including various investment offerings, insights into education and advice, an examination of evolving fiduciary responsibilities, etc — the foundation of this year’s meeting will be the best means of transforming principles (ie, good intentions) into practical solutions (answers) for DC plan sponsors.

Plan sponsors interested in receiving an invitation to attend the Defined Contribution Symposium as our guest should contact David Munro at (212) 224-3056 or via email at dmunro@iiconferences.com.

Providers of 401(k) services interested in sponsoring the Forum should contact Adele Langie at (212) 224-3611 or via email at alangie@iimemberships.com.

Defined Contributions Symposium-Chicago

June 13, 2007

Defining Plan Sponsors’ Responsibilities in an Increasingly Homogenized Market

October 6-7, 2008
The Mid-America Club | Chicago

Are we seeing a compression in the solutions available to plan sponsors and the options they are able to offer their participants? Has the changing regulatory environment limited plan sponsors’ choices or freed them to focus on a broader range of issues facing employees and retirees? How has the crowding into the DC space of traditionally DB managers altered the dialogue? Are providers continuing to offer a variety of solutions to plans of different sizes and needs or are they taking a homogenized approach to both mid-sized and large plans?

Institutional Investor’s inaugural event, the Defined Contribution Symposium-Chicago, is being developed to complement our two defined contribution-focused meetings while being specifically tailored to addressing the needs of mid-sized and larger DC plans in what seems to be an increasingly homogenized DC market. The day and a half program will address such issues as:
• Has the growing acceptance of target date funds led to a tacit “turning off” of interest by plan sponsors in offering unique investment options to their employees? Has the increasing prevalence of one-size-fits-all solutions actually constrained plan sponsors and ameliorated the need for intensive education and advice efforts?
• How is the focus on the db-ification of DC plans affecting plan sponsors’ fiduciary responsibilities, specifically in terms of education, advice, and communication? What aspects of defined benefit plans can and should be incorporated into DC offerings and which must be better relegated to history?
• A discussion of whether plans have become overly focused on the payout phase as their participants age, and whether the PPA and other initiatives have caused sponsors to take their eyes off accumulation issues. If the answer is yes, what is the appropriate mix of attention and resources to both accumulation and disaccumulation issues?
• Where should sponsors draw the line when it comes to offering increasingly sophisticated investment choices such as alpha extension strategies, hedge funds, and even commodities funds?
• What is the appropriate perspective plan sponsors should have in terms of their employees’ overall retirement security? Besides health and healthcare issues, should their responsibilities reasonably extend to such concerns as financial planning, debt management, and mortgages?

Institutional Investor’s Defined Contribution Symposium-Chicago is designed to help senior benefits and treasury executives grapple with the array of important issues now facing DC plans. This unique forum offers a program of highly interactive education, discussion and debate on issues critical to the future of the industry. Leading plan sponsors will share up-to-the-minute intelligence on what they are doing with their individual plans as well as the trends they are seeing in the DC market as a whole. The Symposium will provide plan sponsors with a value forum in which to share experiences and exchange ideas with their peers.
